VPS Celebrate 100 years of Eaton Powerware

October 21st marks a true milestone in Eaton’s history. On that day one hundred years ago, Joseph Eaton started an axle manufacturing business with his brother-in-law, Henning Taube, and an inventor named Viggo Torbensen. Starting out as Torbensen Gear and Axle Co. in the small American town of Bloomfield, New Jersey, the company built upon a new idea for transportation – the first gear-driven truck axle, invented by Torbensen.

During its first year, the company produced just seven hand-made axles. Within six years, business was going full speed ahead, with a total of 33,000 axles produced.

Over the years, the company has changed in name and form several times, but the first major step towards becoming a global company came in 1946. In the wake of the Second World War, Eaton acquired a minority interest in a British motor pump and gear production company. This was the first of many acquisitions that have shaped Eaton into a company with a truly global presence.

Today, Eaton sells products to customers in more than 150 countries. Its four business groups, Electrical, Aerospace, Hydraulics and Vehicle, serve a diversity of global markets, ranging from aviation, agriculture and construction to energy, infrastructure and healthcare.

Eaton timeline

Eaton BladeUPS is designed to work in harmony with data centre IT systems across the world. Easy to install and use, it scales to meet growing power needs.

When setting up or upgrading a data centre, the main aim is to optimise the use of initial capital set aside for expenditure and running costs without compromising on reliability.

This can be achieved by adopting a “demand approach” to power, says Stefan Coote, manager of solutions for small and medium data centres at Eaton.

“A demand approach means that a data centre’s infrastructure is designed not only for today’s needs, but also to scale and grow for future power demand, which helps control and manage the initial capital expenditure of powering a data centre.”

“Then high-efficiency technologies in Eaton UPS, such as Eaton BladeUPS, reduce operational costs of powering a data centre whilst providing the filtering and protection of a double conversion UPS. This approach enables the data centre to control their total cost of ownership, with no compromise on available power or reliability.”

The modular BladeUPS is specifically designed for data centres, high-density blade servers and IT equipment, enabling simple scaling as power needs grow and minimising operational expenses through its 98 per cent operating efficiency. Power protection ranges from 12 to 60 kilowatts in N+1 configurations, with the 60 kW N+1 available mounted in a single standard 19-inch rack enclosure. The capacity expands by combining 12 kW 6U modules in a building block fashion.

”This means the number of modules can be altered to meet the changing requirements. And if you need to move your IT equipment, simply redeploy the BladeUPS and it’s ready to use,” Coote explains.

The BladeUPS can save on space and money – its carbon footprint is 70 per cent less than the competition, and a 60 kW N+1 solution can save more than €24,000 over five years in energy costs alone.

BladeUPS key features and benefits

The primary role of any UPS system is to provide short-term power in the event that the primary input power source fails. Therefore UPS systems are a wise investment for the prevention of power and information loss. However, most UPS units are also capable of correcting common utility power problems, these are:

Power failure: defined as a total loss of input voltage.

Surge: defined as a momentary or sustained increase in the main voltage.

Sag: defined as a momentary or sustained reduction in input voltage.

Spikes: defined as a brief high voltage excursion.

Noise: defined as a high frequency transient or oscillation, usually injected into the line by nearby equipment.

Frequency instability: defined as temporary changes in the mains frequency.

Harmonic distortion: defined as a departure from the ideal sinusoidal waveform expected on the line.

UPS units are divided into categories based on which of the above problems they are best suited for.

BUSINESSES were forced to close when a series of power cuts caused chaos in Colchester town centre.

Frustrated shopkeepers counted the cost after several were forced to close for a second day, leaving customers disgruntled.

Parts of Colchester’s High Street and Culver Street, including several banks and restaurants, were left in the dark when the electricity supply failed at about 4.30pm on Monday.

It returned four hours later – before failing again.

Then, on Tuesday morning, some shops and businesses were hit once more.

Shopkeepers have speculated the power system could not cope with the recent hot weather.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks admitted it was still looking into the fault. He confirmed a transformer had malfunctioned and there had been proplems with a cable end.

One of the shops affected was Cornish Kitchen, on Culver Street.

Manager Jim Hollingsworth said: “We lost some trade on Monday night and business on Tuesday morning because we couldn’t offer coffee or paninis.

“It is frustrating, but one of those things. We heard all the air conditioning being on was too much for the sub-station.”

Adam Eaton, manager at Lloyds Bank, High Street, said: “We closed early on Monday and were shut again Tuesday morning. Everything went down. We asked how long it would last and were told ‘how long is a piece of string?’ “We apologise for inconvenience to customers, but we do have a branch in Crouch Street.”

Others affected included NatWest, Nationwide, Santander, Next, Gap and Superdrug.

Some closed from 4.30pm on Monday up until Tuesday afternoon.

Some shops were left trying to operate a limited service, including Bakers Oven, which risked losing a quantity of stock.

Phil Spiby, spokesman for UK Power Networks, said: “Our engineers worked as quickly as possible to repair the fault on our high voltage network in the centre of Colchester on Monday.

“Sixty four customers in the High Street and Culver Street area lost supply at 4.34pm following an equipment fault and were all restored between 8.13pm and 8.47pm.

“A further 38 customers went off again at 12.10am for 45 minutes.

“Regrettably, 21 customers in the same area lost supply again at 9.09am yesterday, when a secondary fault developed. All customers were restored by midday.’’ Mr Spiby added: “Despite there being nobody currently off-power, we have three engineers on site monitoring the situation should any further problems occur.

“We know how difficult it is to be without electricity and apologise to all those affected.”

Some shops are considering claiming against the power company.

Eaton has received type approval certification for its successful Eaton 9155 and 9355 Marine UPSs (uninterruptible power supply) from global classification society Det Norske Veritas. These new products, which are now available, are the industry’s first DNV type approved 15 kVA UPSs. With a power rating of 8–15 kVA, the new 9155 and 9355 Marine UPSs are especially suitable for use with navigation, communications, automation and bridge equipment. Type approval means that the products have been verified as suitable for marine use and are ready to use “out of the box”.

“The classification society’s type approval is proof of quality for customers. Our customers have expressed a wish to use type approved UPSs in the mid-range as well, so acquiring DNV’s type approval certificate for our 8–15 kVA Marine UPSs showcases Eaton’s commitment to listening closely to, and serving, our customers’ needs,” says Teppo Henttonen, special systems manager at Eaton Power Quality, EMEA.

Using type approved UPSs simplifies and shortens marine UPS projects, saving the customer time and money. Requiring no additional project surveys or certificates, they are an ideal choice for marine applications. Both new UPSs fulfil requirements for durability and resistance to environmental conditions, such as vibration, shock and extreme changes in inclination and temperature. They also comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for maritime navigation and radio communications equipment, and systems standard (IEC60945), allowing them to be installed on the bridge without concerns about interference with the vessel’s sensitive bridge equipment. “The new 9155 and 9355 Marine UPSs are based on proven technology, as standard UPSs have been on the market for several years. They are easy to install on mounting rails that can be bolted or welded to the deck head. Their small footprint also saves space on ship and rig installations, and because they use the same core technology as standard UPSs, spare parts are also globally available,” Henttonen concludes. In addition to the 9155 and 9355 Marine UPSs, Eaton’s other type approved products are the Eaton 9130 Marine, Eaton EX 1500, Eaton EX 2200 and Eaton EX 3000, all of which have DNV type approval as well as ABS type approval from the American Bureau of Shipping.

Eaton UPS Marine in use

Over the last decades Eaton has worked with top shipping companies and ship builders.

A massive power outage on Wednesday paralysed operations at Police Hospital Garden (PHG), as the hospital lost electricity supply for over 24 hours. Patients lodged at the PHG were most affected, as tests for OPD patients could not be conducted.

According to PHG officials, the hospital receives electricity from three phases, but all of them lost supply. One phase of the hospital has been reserved for supplying power to the operation theatre, X-Ray and ECG laboratories; however, due to the outage, all these departments could not function.

“We have been facing power outage since Wednesday, and Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) has been informed in this regard”, said MS Dr Roshan Ali Bhatti while talking to PPI, adding that KESC had assured resolving their problem within a few hours.

He said hospital administration has a generator which is out of order for the last five years. “A meeting with AIG Welfare has been held for rectifying the problem, and we are optimistic that a generator would be provided to the hospital very soon,” he said.

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) protects an electronic device from several different problems related to its power supply. These problems include voltage surges, voltage sags, total power failures and frequency differences. Each of these issues affects an Uninterrupted Power Supply and connected electronics differently, and the quality of the UPS determines how well it guards the electronics from each of these potential problems.

A standby UPS is used in many homes and office areas because it is a simple, lower cost design that is normally used with less expensive electronic equipment. A standby UPS powers the electronics connected to it using the standard building power by default, but it will automatically detect any problems with the input voltage level, frequency changes, or total loss of power and switch over to battery power supplied through an inverter to save the electronics from any possible damage. The entire process of detecting the problem and then switching on to the power inverter takes just a small fraction of a second, but can cause a device to lose power temporarily because of the change in the path used to supply electricity. Also, if it does not switch quickly enough, the electronics can be damaged by the change in input power.

The other type of UPS that is commonly used is an online UPS, which is designed so the electronics normally run using battery power. The input voltage is passed through a battery charger to the battery, and the output from the battery is sent through an inverter to ensure that the power supplied to the electrical equipment is as clean as possible. The UPS only uses the input voltage to supply power to the electronics if there is a problem with the battery. These UPS systems provide more reliable backup power than a standby UPS, but they do cost more.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies are a must-have tool for anyone with a computer, printer or television in their home or high priced servers used in offices and laboratories. Many expensive electronics can be ruined just by one voltage spike, sag or power outage. However, if your electronics are plugged into a Uninterrupted Power Supply, it will automatically redirect power to an internal battery and make sure that a battery powers your electronics for the split second as the electrical abnormality passes through the circuit.

Re:sourcesUK is located with 3 large office complexes in the prestigious Kensington Village Development near the heart of London.

Re:sources approached Trevor Walker of Value Power Systems to provide total refurbishment of two large Merlin Gerin UPS units along with a full maintenance plans to support these UPS units all year round. Stringent criteria was to be met for the parts replacement, predominantly that of keeping all of the Resources IT facilities running while any works were taking place, they being a truly 24/7 operation.

A full survey by VPS engineers took place before the works, to ascertain exactly what was necessary for both UPS units, one a Galaxy 80kVA and the other a 50kVA. As well as the parts being replaced VPS also changed out all of the batteries of both units, all of the parts used were genuine Merlin Gerin replacements, AHF Capacitors, DC and AC Capacitors and new fan arrangements.

The works took place over one weekend, starting late Friday through to Saturday evening to minimise disruption of the clients work space, personnel and systems, indeed 95% of the actual works took place out of hours. Utilisation of the UPS bypasses enabled the units to be isolated while the works were carried out. The 80kVA was located in the clients main office centre, the 50kVA was located in the underground plant room which made access and removal of the batteries from this area slightly more difficult, and of course all of the new batteries had to be brought into this area also. Environmentally safe certified disposal of all of the old batteries was provided with 80% of the old materials being recycled.

After all of the works had taken place VPS also provided a full maintenance and emergency call out program for the Resources site which offers total emergency cover 24 hours a day 365 days a year with an short response time to the site with trained engineers. Along with this two maintenance visits a year are carried out to ensure the continued smooth operation of the UPS.

Neil Jennings of Re:sourcesUK IT management said “This wasn’t an easy refurbishment, VPS worked very professionally with us around the office complex and our operations. Throughout, they worked with safety always in mind and had everything arranged down to the battery disposal and packaging clearance. We wouldn’t hesitate to call them again.”

Trevor Walker of VPS said “This was a major engineering solution, with ongoing logistics, to provide our services, and continue to provide our services into a difficult site. We seem to rise to the challenge each time, which will always be the case given the team we have around us, from the office staff who handle necessary paper works, to Project Management which ensures the smooth running of these larger company requirements, and to the engineers who handle just about everything thrown at them with consummate ease.”
